2019 Genesis G70: Performance Meets Practicality

2019 Genesis G70

Introduction

Luxury sports sedans are renowned for their performance, but how do they fare when loaded with passengers and luggage? To find out, we took the 2019 Genesis G70, a standout in its class, on a 587.4-mile journey from Chicago’s southwest suburbs to St. Louis and back. This trip not only served as a break-in period after replacing the sedan’s front-passenger tire but also as a real-world test of its capabilities under load.

The Load: Four Adults and Luggage

Our test involved four adults and their overnight bags, totaling approximately 700 pounds. This weight is within the G70’s maximum capacity of 904 pounds but represents an 18% increase over its empty curb weight of 3,965 pounds. The question was, how would this affect the car’s performance?

Performance Under Pressure

Equipped with all-wheel drive and a turbocharged 3.3-liter V-6 engine producing 365 horsepower and 376 pounds-feet of torque, the G70 is no slouch. Solo, it can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 5 seconds. However, with the added weight, the car’s acceleration was dialed back from thunderous to merely proficient. Despite this, the G70 managed to navigate slower traffic with ease, though the exhilarating burst of speed was noticeably diminished.

Fuel Efficiency: A Pleasant Surprise

One area where the G70 excelled was fuel efficiency. Despite the extra weight, the trip averaged 28.8 mpg according to the car’s trip computer, with pump fill-ups averaging 27.2 mpg. These figures are impressive, especially considering the AWD 3.3-liter G70’s EPA-estimated highway mileage is 25 mpg. Factors contributing to this efficiency included the use of cruise control, closed windows, and consistent air-conditioning usage.

Fuel Grade Flexibility

The Genesis G70 recommends premium fuel for optimal performance but does not require it. During our trip, an accidental fill-up with 87-octane gas led to an interesting discovery. Despite the lower octane, the G70 performed admirably, with no noticeable drop in highway acceleration or overall drivability. This flexibility can lead to significant savings, as premium fuel costs approximately 22% more per gallon.

Conclusion

The 2019 Genesis G70 proves to be a versatile luxury sports sedan, capable of handling both performance demands and practical needs. Whether you’re cruising solo or loaded with passengers and luggage, the G70 offers a balanced blend of power, efficiency, and comfort. Its ability to run on lower-grade fuel without significant performance loss is an added bonus, making it a compelling choice for discerning drivers.
