2019 Subaru Forester Review: A Comprehensive Look at Its Features and Performance

2019 Subaru Forester

Introduction

Since its debut in September 2018, the redesigned 2019 Subaru Forester has quickly become Subaru’s best-selling model, maintaining its top position for five consecutive months. This fifth-generation compact SUV combines all-weather capability with refined interior quality and comfort, making it a standout in its class. While it may not appear radically different from its predecessor, the 2019 Forester offers substantial improvements that enhance its appeal.

Trim Levels and Overview

The 2019 Subaru Forester is available in five trim levels: Base, Premium, Sport, Limited, and Touring. Each trim offers a unique set of features catering to different preferences and budgets. MotorVero had the opportunity to test the Sport and Touring trims during a media preview, and we also evaluated a Limited edition at our headquarters. Here’s a detailed look at what we liked and what could be improved.

Things We Like

1. Exceptional Visibility

The Forester has consistently excelled in visibility comparisons among small SUVs, winning accolades in 2009, 2014, and 2017. The 2019 model continues this legacy with slim pillars, a low beltline, and large windows that minimize blind spots. The windshield pillars are pulled back toward the driver, and the side mirrors are positioned lower on the doors, providing an extra triangle window in the lower corners. This design ensures excellent visibility, a critical factor for safety and driving confidence.

2. All-Weather Capability

With 8.7 inches of ground clearance and Subaru’s standard all-wheel-drive system, the Forester handles dirt, mud, and snow with ease. The torque-vectoring capabilities and selectable driving modes on higher trims optimize traction in various conditions. While it may not rival the Jeep Cherokee in rock crawling, the Forester is a top choice for snowy roads, sand, and mud. Our tests in Chicago confirmed its excellent power transfer, even in challenging conditions.

3. Upgraded Interior

The 2019 Forester’s cabin features improved materials, with low-gloss padding replacing cheap, hard plastics in key areas. Sport models boast brushed-metallic finishes on climate controls and vents, while Touring trims offer luxurious leather upholstery. These upgrades make the Forester’s interior more appealing and comfortable, a significant improvement over previous generations.

4. Value for Money

Starting at $25,270, including destination, the Forester offers a standard automatic transmission and all-wheel drive, making it competitively priced against front-wheel-drive rivals. The inclusion of Subaru’s EyeSight suite of safety and driver assistance technology as standard equipment further enhances its value proposition.

Things We Don’t Like

1. Cumbersome Controls

Despite the upgraded materials, the interior design has drawn criticism for its poorly located buttons and an unnecessary dash-top screen. The controls for safety and other features are scattered, making them difficult to use. This lack of logical organization detracts from the overall user experience.

2. Flawed Cargo Shade

The retractable cargo shade, while convenient in theory, is poorly executed. Users must remove two outboard flaps and raise the floor, with the space being poorly defined and tolerances too tight. This makes the feature less practical than it appears on paper.

3. Lack of Distinctive Styling

The 2019 Forester’s styling is evolutionary rather than revolutionary, making it hard to distinguish from its predecessor. While this may appeal to loyal Subaru fans, those seeking a more trendy, swoopy design may be disappointed.

Conclusion

The 2019 Subaru Forester is a well-rounded compact SUV that excels in visibility, all-weather capability, and value for money. While it has some shortcomings in interior design and styling, its strengths make it a top contender in its class. Whether you’re navigating city streets or venturing off the beaten path, the Forester is a reliable and practical choice.
